Super agent Jorge Mendes has insisted his client Cristiano Ronaldo is the best footballer of all time despite missing out on the Ballon d’Or this year.
Mendes made the comments when speaking to Italian TV channel Sportitalia after Ronaldo missed out on the award to former teammate Luka Modric.
When asked about Ronaldo failing to land the coveted prize, Mendes said: “Enough. Cristiano is the best in history. In England, in Spain and in Italy, everywhere, he is the best in history.”
Ronaldo has won five Ballon d’Or crowns but finished second behind Modric in this year’s prize, which is voted for by 180 journalists.
Modric won 753 points in the voting after helping Real Madrid win a third consecutive Champions League crown and leading Croatia to the country’s first ever World Cup final.
Ronaldo finished with 476 votes, ahead of French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann (414 votes) and Kylian Mbappe (347).
Five-time winner Lionel Messi finished in fifth place in the voting, something his Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde described as “absurd”.
This year’s award marks the first time since 2007 that neither Messi nor Ronaldo has taken the prize, with Brazilian play-maker Kaka, then of AC Milan, the last player to walk away with world football’s highest individual accolade before the duopoly began.
